The Evolution Of Global Learning & Collaboration

The Flat Classroom Project is an interesting effort that’s working on something pretty cool–and impressively ambitious: global learning.

Their website explains that the “Flat Classroom® Project is a global collaborative project that joins together middle and senior high school students. This project is part of the emerging tend in internationally-aware schools to embrace a holistic and constructivist educational approach to work collaboratively with others around the world in order to create students who are competitive and globally-minded.”

The definition of global learning is, well, slippery, but certainly would have to involve broad scales, diverse cultures, rapidly changing challenges, and an “inclusive,” collaborative approach.

The following chart provides an overview of the way this collaboration has changed by looking at 2 fundamental parameters: Connectivity and Content, moving from slow, intermittent classroom–>classroom connections for the purpose of information exchange, to faster, persistent, classroom–>classroom connections for the purpose of information exchange and artifact co-creation.

A takeaway for you in parallel with this thinking? How about a Project-Based Learning unit that brings two or more international classrooms together to address a challenge they both share.
